"Vision is the bottleneck of talent. Most talent is wasted because people do not clearly know what they want. It's not a lack of effort, but a lack of direction. There are many capable people in the world, but relatively few that focus on what matters." – James Clear

Cheryl Gochis, VP of HR here at Baylor, regularly asks the question to new hires, "Where have you experienced the Baylor mission?" This is a question that is usually answered with eagerness. Story after story she hears from our employees boasting of the impact a professor, a staff member, or a student has had on them. To experience Baylor is to experience its people, processes and programs.

It can be daunting to think about let alone begin to create a great employee experience, but it's significant for you as a manager to consider your role in helping employees positively connect with Baylor as well as embody the mission.

Take just a moment to think on, what does it mean to be a Baylor Bear.

No really. Take just a moment…

Now think on, what it means to be a Baylor Bear in your specific department or area. The answers to these questions can begin the work of further connecting your team to the mission and vision of Baylor.

Glassdoor surveyed employees from the US, UK, and France and Germany. Their findings showed that 79% of adults would consider a company's mission and purpose before applying for a job there, while over three quarters (77%) would consider a company's culture. They also found that company culture is one of the main reasons that almost two-thirds (65%) of employees stay in their job.

The good news is, this effort is worthy and you don't have to go at it alone. Baylor already has a strong mission and purpose attracting faculty and staff. Take notice of what programs are currently available, give constructive feedback on processes for the greater good, and ultimately continue to use your role and platform to help your employees connect meaningfully to their work and to the University.

A simple way to help connect employees to the Baylor experience, especially those who aren't alumni, is to highlight traditions and remind your team about upcoming events such as concerts, theater, sports, as well as the faculty and staff focused events. Additionally, as some employees are remote or working in locations other than our main campus, you can highlight and emphasize online events such as the Conversation Series, Baylor 101, as well as any team gatherings, and rhythms you can implement to ensure they are key to your operations.

Is this an area you feel successful in? We'd love to hear your story or ways you have helped your team feel even more connected to Baylor. Email us @ askHR@baylor.edu with the Subject Line - Connecting To Employee Experience - {INSERT DEPT NAME}.
