Spiritual Wellbeing Leave - Manager Info

August 23, 2023

As a part of the ongoing University commitment to promoting Spiritual Wellbeing among its employees a Spiritual Wellbeing Taskforce was created during the 2022-23 academic year. The Taskforce was charged with exploring the needs and opportunities for programming that would continue to nurture the faith of Baylor faculty and staff. In June 2023, the Taskforce presented its recommendations to members of the President’s Council. While additional communication on the Taskforce’s recommendations is anticipated this fall, we are excited to inform the Baylor Community about one particular item enthusiastically supported by the President’s Council that will begin September 1, 2023.

All eligible Baylor staff employees will receive 8 hours per year of accrued time off dedicated to Spiritual Wellbeing. These hours are meant to provide space and time for this opportunity. Of course, spiritual renewal is not limited to one day, but this step enables freedom to enhance current practices. Like other time off, Spiritual Wellbeing Leave will be requested and approved through the Ignite Absence Module.

While individuals may use this time as they are so moved, a few suggestions include: a silent retreat day, taking part in a local community service project, volunteering time with one’s faith community, appreciating God’s work in nature and the arts, or spending time in personal spiritual reflection through journaling, painting, or another activity. Spiritual Wellbeing results from our communion with God and greatly supports our mental health.  All eligible Baylor staff employees are encouraged to use this benefit to further these endeavors.

As a manager, your role in fostering a supportive environment is critical. As staff begin to take advantage of the Spiritual Wellbeing Leave, we want to hear from you and your team members and hopefully share those experiences more broadly. Please encourage your team to email Lauren_Vorderkunz@baylor.edu with their experiences. Additional resources specific for managers are located at this link.
